Inspired by CCSL-USP, a new CCSL opened in Rio Grande do Norte
A new Free Software Competence Center opened in Brazil. Inpired by CCSL-USP, in the last April, 25th the CCSL of the Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia do Rio Grande do Norte (IFRN) was officially born. The CCSL-USP congratulates the initiative and wish success for the Rio Grande do Norte "brother".
SPACE's DIY summer camp for Kids
SPACE's summer camp that promotes maker culture among children got underway at its office today. The 12 day camp will hold workshops for students from class 6 to 8 to introduce them to basic electronics, robotics, programming and various web technologies. Using their creative prowess and logical ability children will develop 3D games, mobile apps, animation videos etc at the camp.

Hardware Freedom Day celebrated
Art, nature and technology converged at the Museum Bandstand in Thiruvananthapuram when members of SPACE, Beginow, and FSUG-TVM gathered to celebrate Hardware Freedom Day 20 April 2013. Musical notes sprang from plantains at the touch of fingers, robots darted across the floor in hot pursuit of its spectators and a 3 D printer coughed up physical replicas of three dimensional images fed to it creating quite a stir among those gathered at there.
IME-USP students are awarded on Educational Data Hackaton promoted by Lemann Foundation and INEP
The 1st Hackathon of Educational Data promoted by INEP and the Lemann Foundation was held at Brasília, the capital of Brazil, from April 12nd to 14th. The team, with students from IME - USP, formed by Carlos Eduardo Moreira dos Santos, Fabrício de Sousa Nascimento, Marcelo Granja, Pedro Luis Furio Raphael e Thiago Oliveira de Paiva won the third place.
2nd USP FLOSS Week
The USP FLOSS Competence Center with the help of the PoliGNU group invite everyone to the II FLOSS Week at USP (SSL-USP)
From April 22rd to 27th, the week will feature several lectures and workshops in multiple campus of the University of São Paulo to promote and discuss about FLOSS and related topics.
SPACE to organise Hardware Freedom Day Celebrations

SPACE will join hands with Beginow and Free Software Users Group-Trivandrum to organise Hardware Freedom Day celebrations in Thiruvananthapuram. A series of programmes will be held at the Bandstand , Napier Museum from 3 p.m to 7 p.m on 20 April 2013. During the event, various open hardware projects will be demonstrated. These include international initiatives like Arduino for robotics, Raspberry Pi for low cost computing, RepRap 3D printing technology and the Indian project expEYES for scientific experimentation, initiated by the Malayalee scientist Dr Ajith Kumar.
Talks with Carolyn Seaman
On March 26 and 27 we will have the pleasure of attending the lectures on Using Qualitative Methods in Empirical Studies of Software Engineering and on Measuring and Monitoring Technical Debt by Carolyn Seaman, Associate Professor of Information Systems at the University of Maryland and research Fellow at the Fraunhofer Center for Experimental Software Engineering.

SPACE makes a case for interdisciplinary research on Malayalam computing
SPACE made a presentation at the one day Malayalam Computing workshop jointly organised by Thunchath Ezhuthachan Malayalam University and Kerala State IT Mission on February 8 2013, at Padmam Auditorium, Thiruvananthapuram. Mr Rijoy V from SPACE spoke about the need for a concerted but interdisciplinary research initiative for making Malayalam more web compliant.

Psychiatry Department students visit Insight
20 PG students led by Dr. Nazeer, Social Scientist, Psychiatry Department of Medical College Thiruvananthapuram visited Insight centre at Murinjapalam as a part of their commmunity work on 31 January 2013. Mr. Arun M, Executive Director of SPACE briefed them about the objectives of Insight and also about the free software used in the centre. Mrs Nila, explained the activities carried out at the centre. The visitors learned first hand how individualised educational plans are carried out for each child at the centre and the methods and approaches of the teachers.
Training for special teachers of Rotary Institute
Training was organised for the teachers of the Vazhuthacaud based Rotary Institute for Children in Need of Special Care at Insight centre, Murinjapalam on 18 January 2013. The trainees were Mrs. Renuka V.S., Mrs. Jino P.Jose and Mrs. Rani. Five sessions were were held as part of the training. In the first session, Mrs. Lethi gave an introduction to free software used at the centre and explained all the activities in GCompris. The second session was handled by Mrs. Kavitha and she covered Childsplay and PysyCache. Mrs. Sulekha dealt with KLettres, Tux typing and Tux Math. Mrs. Shilpa demonstrated the activities in starfall.com and Jacobs lesson.
ICT training at Wayanad - second phase
In the second phase of the training for students at the Community Agrobiodiversity Centre, Kalpetta, held on 12- 13 January 2013, document creation, malayalam typing, image capturing etc., were explained. After this programme, the students are expected to conduct study on the bio-diversity, rituals and traditions of their native land and later record them using ICTs.
Workshop on Alfresco Document Management System
SPACE and IIITM-K jointly organised a training workshop on Alfresco Document Management System on 2 January 2013 at IIITM-K Lab, Technopark. The resource person Mr. Joseph John, an engineer based in the UAE, is a promoter of free and open source tools.
Seminar at KFB, Kannur
SPACE made a presentation on “Assistive technologies for the visually challenged” at the 45th annual conference of Kerala Federation of the Blind. Mr Rijoy from SPACE talked about the latest free software based ICT technologies for the visually challenged. Android based mobile applications caught the special attention of the participants. The seminar was held at College of Commerce, Kannur on 30 December 2012. The conference was inaugurated by Mr. K. Sudhakaran, Member of Parliament at Jubilee Hall, Kannur. More than hundred visually challenged people from various districts of Kerala attended the session.
ICT training for students at Agro Bio Diversity Centre, Kalpatta, Wayanad
64 students selected by Community Agrobiodiversity Centre, Kalpatta received training in ICT tools during workshops held between 27 to 30 December 2012. For purposes of convenience, the participants were divided into two groups of 30 and 34 students based on their age.
SPACE partners with Agro Bio-Diversity Centre, Wayanad for rural development
SPACE programme for setting up rural information, technology and documentation centres has been extended to Wayanad through Community Agrobiodiversity Centre of M S Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF). The centre will spearhead activities to document and preserve the traditional knowledge and cultural heritage of the tribes of Wayanad and also explore other possibilities that ICT offers.
